A Living Hope (October)

Last month, Carmen Gonzalez-McKernie led us through a four-week series on Creation care. She prepared delicious and healthy meals every Wednesday evening, and we followed with exhilarating discussion about our role in Creation. Thank you, Carmen, for your service. And thank you all who came and supported Carmen as she prepares to serve Christ’s Church in the future.

Those four weeks reminded us of a living hope we hold dear, that though our master died on the cross, he indeed rose from the dead. And though he ascended into heaven, he indeed will return and redeem earth. And though we may die, God will raise us up in new life just as God rose Jesus in new life. Or as 1 Peter puts it,

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. 1 Peter 1:3-4

1 Peter has to be one of my favorite books in the Bible. It is a book I have spent hours memorizing and meditating over, a book that has formed my faith ever since I committed my whole life to Jesus. It is a book that reminds us Christians today that to follow Christ will involve suffering, but can endure because of the living hope we have through Christ’s resurrection.

I have said often that Easter changes everything. Peter is a man who can testify to that truth. He writes this book, 1 Peter, explaining the ramifications of this monumental event we call the Resurrection. Even the prophets of old and angels longed to look into the things of which Peter writes. What a privilege to discover age-old mysteries while reading 1 Peter.

And this is exactly what we will be doing. Beginning in October, We will study through 1 Peter on Wednesday evenings. Come join us at 6pm as we sing together, pray together, and study God’s Word together. God has given us new birth into a living hope. Come and discover with us what that means for us Christians living in 2013 in North Carolina at Mount Hermon Baptist Church.

In Christ,

Pastor Rich
